Ledge Light
New London, CT 2020
One of these days I'll capture an image of the Ledge Light with which I'm really satisfied. So far such an image has eluded me.

Lighthouse
Lakeside Park, Fond du Lac, WI 2019
The lighthouse was built in 1933 during the great depression at no cost to the city of Fond du Lac. It sits at the southern end of Lake Winnebago, marking the entrance to the harbor and yacht club. The lighthouse was saved from demolition in 1967, after having fallen into disrepair and was restored in 1993.

Ledge Light
New London, CT
Way out on the horizon, looking pretty small is the Ledge Light, which marks the entrance to the Thames River, and harbor at New London. I don't think it's operational anymore, or if it is, it is totally automated. I've never driven by during the night to see if the light works or not.

New London Light
New London, CT 2016
It has been a few days since my last post. Between work, family and my barbershop singing activities, there has been little time to photography and blog. I've also had a hard time getting motivated since it seems like I've photographed everything around here and have featured the same things over and over again in this blog. In any event, I got out recently with a couple of missions in mind. I've driven by this lighthouse many times, but finally got out of my car to see if I could get a decent photo. It sits at the mouth of New London Harbor, on the Thames River, but it sits on private property and is surrounded by other houses, utility wires etc. This was about the best I could do. Then again, it's not really necessary that lighthouses be clearly seen while on land, right?

Fresnel Lens
Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT
The Fresnel Lens was invented by the Frenchman Augustine Fresnel in 1822. Using curved panes of glass, the lens was able to concentrate the light from a single source and project that light much farther than a simple pane of glass. The lenses came in various sizes, designated as "orders" with a "1st Order" being the largest down to a "7th Order". This particular Fresnel Lens is a "4th Order" lens weighing between 400 and 600 lbs. It is capable of projecting a beam of light 15 miles.

Ledge Light
New London, CT
Ledge Light, located at the mouth the Thames River has been a subject of my photos and posts here before. I never seem to get quite close enough, even on the ferry, to take what I would consider to be an adequate photo. I do like how Ledge Light is silhouetted against the early morning sun in this photo.

Approaching New London
Groton, CT
The Charles W Morgan is seen here passing two well known landmarks of New London. The upper photo shows the Morgan as she passes the Ledge Light which marks the mouth of the Thames River. In the lower photo, the New London Harbor light can be seen. By all accounts, the ship towed really well, and the voyage from Mystic Seaport to New London went quicker than expected, taking a little over 3 hours.
