Rope Walk

Mystic, CT  2014

With some time off from work due to recent snow storms, I've had a chance to re-visit some photos I made during 2014 that for one reason or another never saw the light of day in this blog.  I was really looking for some "gems" for the blog, since the weather has prevented me from getting out too much to make fresh photos and I'm running low on content, so to speak.  This is from an exhibit at Mystic Seaport that depicts the process for making rope.

Cider Press

Clyde's Cider Mill
Mystic, CT

Between my day job, and some other projects I'm involved with, I haven't had too much time to get out and photograph.  On top of that, the weather has not been conducive to good photography.  So as I result, I'm going through my library of pictures looking for images that I have not posted and hoping to find  a gem or two, that I might have overlooked.  This photo was taken back in November at Clyde's Cider Mill in Mystic.  The place is only open from Sept to December and closes right after Christmas.  They make great apple cider with this press, which was down for cleaning on this particular day.

Steam Engines

Herreshoff Marine Museum

Although best known as a designer and builder of yachts, Nathanael Herreshoff was a mechanical engineer.  He was the first to design light steam engines and also fast torpedo boats for the US Navy.  Some if his engines are also displayed at the museum, alongside his yachts.

Machine Sculpture

Manchester, NH

I wonder what this particular piece of equipment did.  I found it outside of one of the renovated mills in Manchester, NH.  I would imagine it performed some important task inside one of the mills, but exactly what that function was isn't obvious to me.  It does make for a nice sculpture though.

Printing Press

This was taken during a recent trip to the South Street Seaport in New York City.  We were there the last week of December and I've posted some other images from that trip in this blog.  Although the Seaport Museum was closed for the season, there were a couple of galleries and shops open for the holidays, including this 19th Century era Print shop.  The equipment there still works.  It was like taking a step back in time entering this print shop.

Machinery III

I originally posted a picture of this machine here.  This is a close-up shot of that particular piece of machinery.  I can't really take a lot of credit for the post processing I did for this image.  My skills in post processing consists of trying a number of "presets" that are available in the Apple's Aperture, until I find one that I like.  I think a true "artist" would never use some preset, but until my creativity grows, I'll use the presets, and even add to my collection of presets.  I was inspired to do this by a post in the blog Taken for Granted, which I follow.  The images featured some nice black and white conversions of machinery.

Machinery II

Essex, CT

This is a close up of the machine/sculpture shown in an earlier post.  It does appear that the gears were made to mesh together to accomplish some sort of work.
