The Shallop Jane Stevens

Mystic, CT  2021

A shallop is a 17th century small coastal boat without a deck which can be sailed or rowed.  A boat similar to this replica was probably one of the first boats built by the colonists of Popham Colony in Maine in 1607.

Nettle

Mystic, CT  2021

This is a Buzzard's Bay 12-1/2 sailboat designed by the legendary N.G Herreschoff and built by the Herreschoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, RI  in 1914.  There were 365 of these boats built of wood.  The were exceptionally seaworthy and were used to train sailors.

Breck Marshall

Mystic, CT  2021

The Breck Marshall is a reproduction of a Cape Cod catboat built in the small boat workshop at Mystic Seaport in 1987.  Sightseers can enjoy sailing the Mystic River during the warmer months of the year.

Sailing the Thames River

New London, CT  2020

I was actually more interested in the capturing the sailboat, and wasn't paying attention to the background.  You can see parts of the latest submarine under construction at Electric Boat in the background.

Breck Marshall

Mystic Seaport, 2019

The Breck Marshall is a working catboat, similar to those built in the early 1900's around Cape Cod for fishing and pleasure.  This reproduction was built in the small boat shop of Mystic Seaport in 1987.  Today it is used to sail visitors to the seaport around the Mystic River.

Wooden Boat Show 2017 - Murmur

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2017

Murmur is a modern reproduction of the classic "Buzzard Bay 15" sloop originally designed by N. G Herrseshoff and built by The Herreshoff Manufacturing Co of Bristol, RI.  There were 92 boats built with different variations between the years 1898 and 1927.  This model was built in 2009 by Artisan Boatworks  in Rockport, ME and remains true to the original design and materials but does incorporate some of the latest technologies in wooden boat building resulting in today's Herreshoff '15 being stronger and requiring less maintenance.

Safe Harbor

Mystic, CT  2016

The photography gods have conspired against me lately and have kept me from taking fresh pictures to share with all my followers.  I'm going to take a break for the weekend  and will return with regular posts next week.  As always, thanks for looking and I hope you all have a great weekend.

The Passengers

Fishers Island Sound  2016

The schooner Argia can safely accommodate 49 passengers.  I think on this particular cruise we had 37 passengers enjoying what was perfect weather for an evening sail.

Under Sail

Fishers Island Sound

Sunset

Fishers Island Sound

I'm not sure if I was in New York of Connecticut when this photo was taken.  Fishers Island itself is part of the state of New York.  The border between the states runs down the middle of the sound.

The Crew

Captain Amy

First Mate Eric

We were in very capable hands during our voyage down the Mystic River out to Fishers Island Sound.  We all received the mandatory safety instructions from Captain Amy, while First Mate Eric pointed out the sights of interest as well as some local history.

Approaching the Mystic River Bridge

Mystic, CT  2016

All cruises going down the river out to Long Island Sound and Fisher Island Sound have to time their departures and returns to coincide with the raising of the Mystic River Bridge.  This happens at 40 minutes past the hour during the summer months.  We set sail at 5:30 PM, which gave us plenty of time to get past this bridge.

The Schooner Argia

Mystic, CT  2016

Readers of this blog might know of my fondness for boats and sailing.  Although I've never owned boat, I rarely pass up any opportunity to get out on the water, no matter what the vessel.  The Schooner Argia is a popular tourist attraction that offers three daily cruises during the season.  Seen here, she's returning from a mid-afternoon cruise just in time to pick my wife and myself up for the 2-hour early evening cruise.  I will be featuring pictures from our sail this week on my blog.

More Schooners

New London, CT  2015

The last post I made containing a boat was made on Oct 28.  I'd say it's time for a few more images of schooners under sail.
