Indian Leap at Yantic Falls

Norwich, CT  2020

Something of historical significance happened here in 1643, as detailed in the state's historical sign located nearby.  The exact details have been lost to time and to the countless re-tellings of the story.  All accounts that I've read do agree on the fact that a number of Narragansett braves attempted to leap this gorge in order not to be captured by their enemies, the Mohegans.  They fell to their deaths below.  However the Narragansett Sachem Miantonomo did actually make the leap but hurt his leg upon landing on the other side.  He was followed by the Mohegan Sachem, Uncas, who not only made the leap unharmed, but captured his injured rival.

The gorge was much narrower back in 1643, but it still is an impressive leap.

Flume II

Heritage Museum and Gardens
Sandwich, MA  2014

I haven't been very good lately in capturing interesting reflections.  I posted a wide angle shot of this particular flume here and I'm sharing this close up view with this week's Weekend Reflections even though it was taken a couple of months ago.  I'm already missing summer.  Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by.

Flume

Sandwich, MA

If you ever get the chance to visit Cape Cod, you really need to stop off and see the town of Sandwich.  It's the oldest town on the Cape and is home to the Heritage Museum and Gardens, a gorgeous place to visit.  There's about 100 acres of forests, fields, gardens, ponds, trails, playgrounds, museums, art and sculpture.  This water flume cascading into the pond below is one of the many features to be found here.  I'm sharing this with Weekend Reflections.  Have a nice weekend.

Waterfall

Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT

I haven't been very good about posting to my blog lately.  One reason is that I like to post pictures that have been taken fairly recently.  I haven't gotten out much lately to do any serious photography due to other commitments, and some pretty lousy weather.  I also have gotten pretty picky about what photos I do post here.  Of the photos that I have taken in the last month or so, there are very few that I feel are worthy of posting, but I could be my own worst critic in those regards.  In any event, I hope to get back to a regular schedule of posting here, and getting out to take worthy pictures.  We're expecting up to 20" of snow starting today, so if nothing else, I'll have some pictures of snow soon.  I can't wait for spring......

Two Dams

Waterford, CT

This dam is at the site of an old grist mill which operated in Jordan Village from 1731 until it was destroyed by fire in 1905.  Some structural elements of that mill remain.  A modern woolen mill was built on the site in 1920 and is well preserved and used for specialty manufacturing today.  The bridge connects the old mill site across Jordan Falls, where Jordan Creek enters into Jordan Cove, to a small park.  Unfortunately the bridge is closed and unsafe to cross.  I couldn't find another entrance to the park.  A very similar bridge is pictured below.

North Stonington, CT

This bridge was built in 2007 and crosses the Shunock River and is in much better shape than the bridge in the first picture.  The dam forms Hewitt Pond, also known as Hewitt Flyfishing Pond or Gallup Pond.  It's a popular fishing spot.  The bridge was made possible by the Thames River Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Chapman Falls Pot Holes

Devil's Hopyard State Park
East Haddam, CT

Followers of this blog know about my interest in geology and the various rock formations found throughout Connecticut.  I had read about the pot holes found around Chapman Falls and wanted to see them for myself.  There are some fine examples of pretty deep, cylindrical holes formed over thousands of years by natural processes, although legend would have us believe these pot holes are the work of the devil himself.  According to the legend, the devil got angry after his tail got wet in the river here, and he stormed away very angry, with his hooves leaving these "foot prints"in the rocks.  Today these pot holes are like natural little pools, where people can refresh themselves in the cool water.

Chapman Falls

Devil's Hopyard State Park
East Haddam, CT

One of the main attractions at Devil's Hopyard State Park is the picturesque Chapman Falls, pictured here.  The Eight Mile River falls over 60 feet at this spot.  I'm sure the waterfall is much more dramatic after a heavy rainstorm, however after a couple of weeks of relatively dry weather in Connecitcut, the falls is a little more than a trickle.  Still it's a beautiful spot.

Waterfall

Some of the landscape companies go to great lengths to show off their work.  There were many examples of fountains, ponds, and backyard waterworks.

Chagrin Falls

Chagrin Falls

Just some shots of Chagrin Falls, in of all places..... Chagrin Falls, Ohio.  I wonder what came first, the town's name or the falls' name.  In any event, it's a lovely town in the state of Ohio.
