Farm Implement

Stonington, CT  2016

I'm a true city boy and don't know much about farming, so I'm not sure what this piece of farm equipment is.   It seems to be a pretty popular lawn ornament around here, since I've seen this particular machine a number of places.

  1. Ed, had you spent your entire life living on a farm you might not have known what this machine is. This is a 19th Century horse drawn tined hay tedder. Looks like it might have been converted to be drawn by a tractor. It was used to toss up newly mowed hay to help it dry quickly to retain color and nutrition. Same task more commonly achieved using a side delivery hay rake. From the colors of this machine it might have been made by International Harvester Company, called IH.
