Lighthouse Inn Stairs

New London, CT  2016

It has been years since anyone used these stairs leading to an outdoor deck at the rear of the Lighthouse Inn.  They don't even look safe anymore.

Lighthouse Inn

New London, CT  2016

The Lighthouse Inn used to be a very nice place to stay and have a good dinner.  Today it only hints at its former glory having been vacant for a number of years.  Nature is encroaching and I'm sure it will take someone with a lot of money to renovate this resort.  Signs posted on the property tell of a public auction to be held in October.  The property will go to the highest bidder, no matter how low that bid is.   I have a soft spot in my heart for this inn, since I spent my first evening in New London here a little over 13 years ago.

New London Light

New London, CT  2016

It has been a few days since my last post.  Between work, family and my barbershop singing activities,  there has been little time to photography and blog.  I've also had a hard time getting motivated since it seems like I've photographed everything around here and have featured the same things over and over again in this blog.   In any event, I got out recently with a couple of missions in mind.  I've driven by this lighthouse many times, but finally got out of my car to see if I could get a decent photo.  It sits at the mouth of New London Harbor, on the Thames River, but it sits on private property and is surrounded by other houses, utility wires etc.  This was about the best I could do.  Then again, it's not really necessary that lighthouses be clearly seen while on land, right?

Calm Before the Storm

Niantic, CT  2016

The weather this week in southern New England has been dominated by Tropical Storm/Post Tropical Storm Hermine which is currently spinning in the Atlantic about 175 miles southeast off the eastern tip of Long Island with winds of 70 mph, just short of being officially labeled as a hurricane.    I went to the beaches here in town to see if I could get some pictures of waves crashing on the shoreline here but to no avail.  Despite the strong winds, Niantic Bay was very  calm. Nary a whitecap could be found, much less any real waves.  The storm is expected to meander off the coast through tomorrow, and it might had this way.  We're under a Tropical Storm warning, expecting high winds throughout the night.

End of Summer

Noank, CT  2016

My wife and I always make it a point to visit Abbott's Lobster in the Rough once during the summer months.  This summer got a way from us, and we realized that with Labor Day tomorrow, we didn't have much time left to visit Abbott's before they're closed for the season.   So, we made the trip for their famous Hot Lobster Roll.  A fitting way to end the summer.

Eli Terry Jr Water Wheel

Plymouth, CT  2106

Eli Terry Jr was a clock maker who later turned to making locks on this site in the 1830's.  Power for the factory was supplied by this water wheel which is believed to be one of only two water wheels of this type in the United States.  The lock factory eventually became the Eagle Lock Co in 1854 and employed  1800 people. The company ceased operations in 1975.   Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this water wheel is all that remains.

The Eyes Have It

New London, CT  2016

A number of vacant store fronts in downtown New London have been turned into an outdoor exhibition of the work of commercial photographer/artist Joe Standart.  This exhibition is entitled "WE ARE....A Nation of Immigrants" and is one of two exhibitions of Standart's photography in New London this year celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his seminal work "Portraits of a City: The New London Project".  You can read more about Joe Standart and his work here.
