Those structures in the lower left of the pictures are called mooring dolphins. They are used to provide a point for a ship to tie up, where it is impracticable to extend the dock. One can find out a lot spending a little time with Google. So now we know.

DeleteAah. The German word is "Dalbe" - never heard it before. Now I know, too! ;-) Thanks for researching.
