Mystic, CT 2014
In answer to a question posed by a follower of mine on a previous post, the Mystic River Bridge is a bascule bridge. Each of the concrete counterweights weighs about 209 tons, which only partially offsets the weight of the approximately 600 ton weight of the main span. Lifting the bridge requires two, 1400 lb, 40 horsepower direct current electric motors. During the season it raises at 40 minutes past the hour, as shown here.
When lowered, the bridge carries close to 12,000 vehicles a day, traveling on US 1, across the Mystic River. It is quite the tourist attraction in Mystic, and as longtime followers of this blog know, a favorite subject of mine to photograph when in Mystic.

A favorite subject of mine, which has been featured in a number of my blog posts, from a slightly different view point and perspective.

Impetuous
Mystic, CT 2016
It's been a full 30 days since I posted my last picture of a yacht so here is this month's mega-yacht. I came across the Impetuous during my last photo walk around Mystic. She's 120 feet long has a crew of 4 and can accommodate 9 guests in 4 cabins. Some amenities include a 17' tender, 2, two-man wave runners, snorkeling gear, waveboards and other towables. You can charter this yacht for a mere $60,000/wk...... plus expenses.

A new bar will be opening soon in Mystic in this converted service station. I first featured this service station back in March 2014 in this blog and it can be found here. It looks like the new owners have kept the key features of the service station, including the large garage doors, the canopy over where the gas pumps used to be, and the large price sign. I'm glad to see these buildings being re-purposed, but I wonder if Mystic really needs a new bar. I guess I'll have to check it out after it opens.

Old House
Mystic, CT 2016
There is nothing sadder than a grand old house that nobody seems to want anymore. When I see places like this, I wonder what it would've looked like when it was a home.

New London, CT 2016
I didn't capture all of photographer's Joe Standart's work currently on display in the vacant store front windows in New London. I'll leave you with these final images.

WE ARE .... A Nation of Immigrants
New London, 2016
Photographer/Artist Joe Standart has transformed the otherwise vacant storefront windows in downtown New London into an outdoor public gallery featuring his portraits of local citizens who are also immigrants. The display runs until November. My photos do not do these larger than life portraits justice.
