Bridges

Thames River, New London, CT

The day was rather cloudy, and didn't afford the best possible reflections of these two bridges.  The large bridge on the left is the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, which carries I-95 and US 1 across the Thames River in New London.  The lift bridge on the right is a part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor Line which provides Amtrak Train service between Boston and Washington, DC.  For other great reflections, much nicer than these, visit Weekend Reflections.  Have a nice weekend. 

Urban Murals

New London, CT

Lately there seems to be a number of new murals that have appeared on the sides of buildings in downtown New London.  I guess it's far better than having these spaces filled up with graffiti.  

Information

New London, CT

It's a good thing I didn't need any information on the day I walked around downtown New London looking for good subjects to shoot.  The small sign in the painted window says "Closed for the Winter".  I guess nobody in the winter needs any information about what to do or see in New London. 

Eugene O'Neill

New London, CT

Some people claim that Eugene O'Neill was America's greatest playwright.  As a youth he spent his summers in New London, CT, where he no doubt developed is love of the sea which inspired many of his plays.  The statue here depicts him writing along the banks of the Thames River.

World War II National Submarine Memorial

Groton, CT

This is the conning tower of the USS-Flasher (SS-249) now serving as the centerpiece  of the World War II National Submarine Memorial located in Groton, CT.  Engraved in granite around the memorial are pictures and the names of the 52 submarines lost during the war. The names of the submariners lost are engraved on a Wall of Honor.  It's a very simple and humbling memorial, located somewhat fittingly, only a mile or so from the place were most of our country's submarines were built.

Ferry Terminal and Ferry

New London, CT

Located about 2 miles off the coast of Connecticut is Fishers Island.  It's a small island, only about 9 miles long, and although very close to Connecticut, it is really a part of New York.  It's serviced by this ferry, seen leaving New London.  I've taken the Cross Sound Ferry from New London to Orient Point, Long Island, but I've never been to Fishers Island.

I finally had some spare time and some good weather to get out and do a little photography.  I'm sure I've posted some photos of this part of New London before.  This is one of many piers reaching out into the mouth of the Thames River, just before it empties into Long Island Sound.  The sound would be off to the right of the picture.  There is a nice walkway along the piers and a nice place to sit and watch the boat traffic in and out of the harbor.  Although today's weather was pretty mild, with some sunshine, this place will be much nicer to visit in another two months or so.

I was getting tired of looking at all my pictures from the blizzard last weekend, so I decided to re-visit some photos taken this past summer.  It won't be too long until the colors turn green and there won't be so much white around.

Allow me one last picture of last weekend's blizzard, this time rendered in black and white. One week later there are still big piles of snow, but a lot has melted.  I'm ready for spring!

As is often the case with major storms, the day after the storm is gorgeous.  It was a bit chilly, but the sun was bright, and the sky blue.  Later in the week, the temperatures rose well above freezing and all this snow began to melt.  It doesn't look nearly as pretty now.
