I watched the troops being drilled in firing their rifles. These were all single shot rifles which required quite an effort to reload. I'm sure well trained soldiers in the day got off a lot more rounds than these men.
No, professional soldiers weren't much better at loading and firing their muskets. The lead balls they shot were large, but relatively slow moving. Still would not want to get shot by one. The Civil War was deadly, but modern soldiers are even more deadly. Let's hope for peace.
