Springfield, MA 2017
This airplane is the only "Zeta" model made of the popular racing Gee Bee planes. Between 1929 and 1934, Granville Brothers Aircraft, Inc, produced the popular Gee Bee racing planes in Springfield. They were fast, but not the safest planes ever built.
This is likely the most famous air race aircraft ever build. The one in the Springfield Museum is a non-flying replica built from the original plans. You are right about it being unsafe. Many of its highly skilled pilots were killed flying either R-1 or R-2. Fast and dangerous.
