I photographed this vintage WWII bomber on September 10 and featured it a blog post on Sept 19.  On Wednesday, Oct 2, this aircraft crashed shortly after take-off at Bradley International Airport with 13 people on board.  There were 7 fatalities.  My condolences and prayers goes out the families of those who lost their lives.

The P-51 Mustang was one of the most successful fighter planes of WWII.  After the war, its role became less important with the replacement of piston powered aircraft with jet powered fighters.  This particular version was used to train pilots until jet powered trainers became available.

Recently there was a display of vintage WW II aircraft at the Groton-New London Airport.  There are not too many of these planes still flying, so it was great to see them up close.

Stearman PT-17

Over 10,000 of these bi-planes were made during the '30's and '40's and used to train US Army Airforce pilots and Navy pilots.  After the war, thousands of surplus planes were auctioned to the public.  Many were modified to serve as crop dusters and sports planes.  They are often seen today at air shows doing aerobatics and wing walker stunts. 

AOPA Fly-In

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) held a fly-in this past weekend at the Groton-New London Airport.  It was open to the public and featured a number of private airplanes on display along with some military aircraft.  This particular plane is a Beechcraft Bonanza.

Along with sky writing, another  familiar scene along the Connecticut coast line in the summer  are signs like this,  towed behind a plane.  I wonder how many spending time at our beaches see banners like this and immediately leave the beach and head to the closest Shop Rite to buy a lobster?  That is a pretty good price for a lobster, however. 

Gee Bee

Springfield, MA  2017

This airplane is the only "Zeta" model made of the popular racing Gee Bee planes.  Between 1929 and 1934, Granville Brothers Aircraft, Inc, produced the popular Gee Bee racing planes in Springfield.  They were fast, but not the safest planes ever built.
