Meet Dr David Hesse

I can't say enough about Dr. Hesse.  He convinced me that surgery would cure me of the bladder cancer and that I could maintain a good quality of life afterwards.  So on June 5, I underwent 10 hours of surgery, where Dr Hesse and his team of surgeons performed a prosto cystectomy removing both my bladder and prostate and creating a "neobladder" from parts of my intestine.  It is one of the most complex surgeries done at Yale-New Haven, St Raphael's Hospital.  Afterwards the results of all the pathology showed no signs of cancer outside of the bladder.  I was cured, and Dr Hesse said I would live to be an old man.  I've spent the rest of the summer recovering and dealing with some complications resulting from the surgery and learning to adjust to my new bladder.  It hasn't been easy, but definitely worth it.  Thank you Dr Hesse and Dr Portman.  You both are truly life savers.

I remember the days when dinosaurs were all depicted as green or gray creatures.  Current theories suggest that they might have been very colorful.  I guess we'll never know for sure.

No museum of natural history is complete without at least one brontosaurus.  This one was so big, I couldn't get him all in one picture.

I don't need to go to a museum to see this fellow.  They are everywhere here in Connecticut and I often see them grazing right along side I-95, one of the busiest stretches of road in the country.  I did need the museum though to get a picture like this.

Torosaurus Latus

This fellow is found guarding the entrance to the Yale Peabody Museum.  I learned that this particular species of dinosaur is pretty rare.  He lived about 66-65 million years ago and is closely related to the more familiar triceratops.

Finally made some time to visit the Yale Peabody Museum in New Haven, CT.  It's well worth visiting if you're in New Haven.  

Federal Building

I had to look deep in the archives for a reflection that I haven't posted on Weekend Reflections, in this case all the way back to December 27 when this image was captured in New Haven.  Notice the lack of snow!  Have a nice weekend.

Connecticut Savings Bank

At one time this building housed the Connecticut Savings Bank.  One can barely make out the name above the columns.  I'm not sure what became of the bank but I'm glad the building remains.

Palladium Building

There is no shortage of beautiful buildings in downtown New Haven, especially in the Ninth Square Historic District, an area encompassing 3 blocks located in the central business district of New Haven.  This area was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1984 and comprises 78 buildings built in the mid to late 1800's  and into the early 1900's.  A number of different styles of architecture can be found here.  The Palladium Building was built in 1855 and was originally known as the "Young Men's Institute".  The building has been ascribed to the famous New Haven architect, Henry Austin and can be described as an example of Anglo-Italianante/Renaissance Revival architecture.

Bike Rack

I've never seen a bike rack that looks more like a piece of modern sculpture.  I guess it might really be sculpture and not a bike rack though.

Chamberlain's

Found this old store front not far from the New Haven Green on a recent photo walk.  I like that instead of a street address, the building shows it's global coordinates ( 41°18' 14" N  72° 55' 30"W).  Fortunately on the sidewalk in front of this building there is a plaque from which I learned that Abel C Chamberlain opened a furniture store here in 1832.  The family continued the business it what is known as the first furniture retail family business in the United States.   I'm not sure what became of the business, but at least I can always find this building with my GPS.

It was hard to frame a picture of the entire New Haven City Hall with the lens I was using that day.  So I had to settle for some closer shots highlighting the details of his building.  

Robert N. Giaimo Federal Building
