Model Trains

Essex, CT  2016

Model railroads appeal to the child in each of us.  Each year at this time at the Connecticut River Museum, a new model train exhibit is open to the public.  According to their website, the artist and train enthusiast Steve Cryan is responsible for this creation.  The detail he includes is fantastic, whimsical and at times very humorous, especially to the adults.  One can easily spend hours finding all the hidden gems in this ultimate model railroad.

Model Engine

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2016

Not all the engines on display were antiques in the true sense of the word.  The were many miniature models of steam engines on display.  It was obvious a lot of workmanship went into these models.  Although modeled after steam engines, they were being run using compressed air instead.

America

Lyman Allyn Museum, New London, CT  2016

This is the largest  of a series of ship models created by Italian immigrant Pasquale Montesi who settled in Norwich back in 1898.  Montesi learned to sail as a youth in the Italian navy and had quite and eye for detail and a great memory.  He created each of his ship models completely from memory, without the aid of plans or blueprints.  None of his models were actually modeled after a real ship.  He carved all the wood by hand when not working in the fish store he opened in Norwich.  This particular model measure over 12 feet long and 10 feet high .  The detail is quite remarkable.  What's even more remarkable is that Montesi never learned to read or write.

Mystic, ca 1870

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2015

One of the exhibits at Mystic Seaport is this 1/128th scale model of the Mystic River and what the area looked like back about 1870.  The total model is over 50 feet long and depicts the area of Mystic, shown here, as well as the area which today is part of Mystic Seaport.  There are over 250 dwellings, barns, shops and 5 shipyards depicted here.  The model was started in 1958, and work continues upon it today by some of the original volunteers who started it.

Model Airplane II

Freeport, ME

As you can tell, I had quite a bit of time in this particular Freeport boutique shop.  My wife shopped  and I had plenty of time to experiment with various focal lengths, aperture settings and shutter speeds.  The best part was, we didn't purchase anything but did admire a lot of cool stuff which could be purchased some time in the future.

Model Airplane

Freeport, ME

It usually takes my wife a lot longer to shop than I do.  So, while I'm waiting I busy myself by taking pictures of some of the more interesting works of art for sale.  This particular shop had a number of metal model airplanes which looked very detailed.  They also were rather expensive.
