KAMBOS
New London, 2015
One of the many bulk carriers that visit New London. I wonder what bulk she's carrying? It was a dull and dreary day with very muted colors. I think the image looks better in black and white.

Graffiti
Norwich, CT 2015
I've seen much better graffiti, some of which can can be considered as "art". Not here, however.

Most of the boats around here have already been taken out of the water. I did find this one still at it's dock in Norwich.

Urban Ruins II
Norwich, CT 2015
I think this was once a miniature golf course. It certainly looks like one except for one small detail. I could find no "cups" in the turf to putt to. The "course" is tucked away next to the Heritage Trail, a walking path that follows the Yantic River near downtown Norwich. There are definitely walking paths here, with some bridges and what looks like the "turf" fairways found on miniature golf courses. I didn't count the fairways, but I don't think there were 9-holes, much less 18 so I don't think it was quite big enough. At one time there were posts with signs on them, but the signs are long gone. The area was surrounded by No Trespassing signs though, so I guess I shouldn't have walked up here.
I could find no mention of what used to be here in my searches related to the Heritage Trail or the Howard T Brown Memorial Park.

Canon Balls
Stonington, CT 2015
These canon balls grace the entrance to the Stonington Free Library pictured in yesterday's post. I'm pretty sure these are actual cannonballs fired into Stonington by the British during the Battle of Stonington, August 9, 1814. The battle lasted for 4 days, but in the end, the British gave up having underestimated the tenacity of the men and women Stonington and their two cannons, which were the subject of this blog post.

Private Dock
Mystic, CT 2015
I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that included in the price of that home is this lovely dock. I don't think this dock is quite big enough for the yacht I would own, if I was able to afford the house. So I won't be moving here in the near future.

$1.35 Million
Mystic, CT 2015
This is what $1.35 million will buy you in Mystic, CT. The house is right on the waterfront overlooking the Mystic River. You have wonderful views of Mystic Seaport across the river. A number of the houses along this street date from the early 1800's and originally belonged ship captains. The houses are labeled with approximate dates, the owner's name and the ships they captained. This particular home belonged to Capt George Eldredge Jr around 1826.

'Tis the Season
Mystic, CT 2016
It's nice to know that Santa can still get handwritten letters. I haven't checked into this yet, but I would think that in today's connected world, Santa has his own email address and website. I bet you can even text him.

Teas the Season
Mystic, CT 2015
It has been unseasonably warm in southeast Connecticut this December. We've had some freezing temperatures at night, but most days have been sunny with temperatures well into the 50's and even low 60's. Doesn't quite feel like the season.

A week or so ago, I posted a photo of the Rhode Island State Capitol. I felt I needed to provide equal time to Connecticut, so here is our state capitol building.

Santa Special
Essex, CT 2015
It's a busy time of the year, and a number of things have conspired against me to keep me from my regular postings here. At this time of the year, the Essex Steam train runs on weekends as the "Santa Special" and also as the "North Pole Express". The nice weather brought out a big crowd on this day.

Preservation
As I was walking through the financial district in historic downtown Providence looking for interesting buildings to photograph, I came across this particular "building."
Looking at the pictures you might think that this is just the front of what was once a pretty big building, and you'd be right. Only when one walks behind this building do you see to what extent the historic preservation people in Providence have gone through to keep the front of this building intact.
At first glance it looked like a number of the other older buildings in Providence but upon closer inspection, it just didn't seem quite right.
Providence, RI 2015
I'm not sure what the historic significance of this building is. It's nice to see it being preserved, but I do hope someone finishes building something that incorporates, supports and preserves this facade

Exchange Building
Providence, RI 2015
This building dates from 1884 and looks like it is in great shape, and still being used to day. There are a number of buildings like this in Providence.

Providence Building
Providence, RI 2015
Providence is a pretty historic city with a wide variety of architecture seen. I'm not sure what this building is, but it is one of the taller buildings near the financial district in downtown Providence.

Transportation Department
Providence, RI 2015
This building is right across the street from the state house, pictured in yesterday's post. For such a small state, Rhode Island does have a pretty large building housing its Transportation Department.

State Capitol
Providence, RI 2015
I get to Hartford frequently, but have yet to photograph the state capitol of Connecticut. I'll have to fix that real soon. I was in Providence, Rhode Island today and was able to capture some nice images of Rhode Island's State Capitol. The official name of Rhode Islands is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations".

CLA Engineers
Norwich, CT 2015
I normally like to post pictures that I've taken recently, but lately I have not had too much time to get out and shoot. With no recent images to share, I've been looking back in the "archives" to see if I can come up with a gem or two that I might have overlooked. This was taken back in September. It was still summer then.

H&L's Place
Norwich, CT 2015
There are many historic buildings in Norwich and all seem to be eligible for some kind of financial assitance as part of revitalization program. I see some hints of revitalization in Norwich, but there still is much that can be done.
