Canterbury

Canterbury, CT  2021

My wife was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and has long known that the founder of Cleveland was Gen. Moses Cleaveland, born here in Canterbury, CT.  On a recent Sunday drive we decided to visit Canterbury to see if we could find any mention of Moses.  Sure enough, he is prominently  mentioned in this historical sign.  Apparently, mapmakers and surveyors out in the Western Reserve couldn't spell and left the "a" out of Cleaveland's name, hence the city was named Cleveland.

  1. These historic signs suggest a number of dark times with racism aimed at both Indians and blacks. Unfortunately racism has a long history.
