Stearman PT-17

Groton, CT  2017

Over 10,000 of these bi-planes were made during the '30's and '40's and used to train US Army Airforce pilots and Navy pilots.  After the war, thousands of surplus planes were auctioned to the public.  Many were modified to serve as crop dusters and sports planes.  They are often seen today at air shows doing aerobatics and wing walker stunts.

  1. I was at an airshow when a Stearman pulled up to the fuel pumps. The pilot asked of 4 gallons of oil and to have the fuel checked. The attendant brought out 16 quarts of oil to add to the engine. He later did acrobatic maneuvers while his wife stood on the top wing.
