Sabino

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2017

The  stream boat Sabino was returned to service this summer after undergoing a 2 year renovation/restoration which included the installation of a new, custom built boiler.  Built in 1908, she is powered by the same two cylinder Paine compound steam engine installed when she was built. In 1992, the Sabino was designated as a National Historic landmark.

Testing

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2017

While it is fun to look at and admire these antique marine engines, the real fun comes in starting them up and watching them run as shown here.

Gutbucket Musician

Mystic, CT  2017

During the recent outdoor art fair in Mystic, CT a folk music band entertained the passer-by's with some traditional folk music.  The band consisted of a guitarist, a banjo player, a singer,  and this fellow who played the "gutbucket" also known as a washtub bass.  He plucks the chord attached to the stick causing a note which resonates in the washtub below.  He's able to control the pitch of the note by pulling and pushing on the stick thereby increasing or decreasing the tension on the string.

The Bridge is Up

Mystic, CT  2017

It never ceases to amaze me when I see this historic bridge raise to let the boat traffic go up and down the Mystic River.  During the summer months this happens every hour at 40 minutes past the hour.

More Aerial Advertising

Niantic, CT  2017

Along with sky writing, another  familiar scene along the Connecticut coast line in the summer  are signs like this,  towed behind a plane.  I wonder how many spending time at our beaches see banners like this and immediately leave the beach and head to the closest Shop Rite to buy a lobster?  That is a pretty good price for a lobster, however.

Sky Writing

Niantic, CT  2017

I wasn't sure if I could capture this or not.  Skywriting has come a long way from the time when a single plane or two would do acrobatics to write out messages in the sky.  Now five planes flying in formation actually create a huge, flying dot-matrix printer in the sky, releasing perfectly timed puffs of smoke to form the letters.  This skywriting is common along the the Connecticut shore in the summertime and advertises one of the huge Native-American owned and operated casinos located near by, The Mohegan Sun.

Crepes

Niantic, CT  2017

I never knew one could get crepes served in so many different ways.  This was just one of several food vendors at the recent "Celebrate East Lyme" fair here.

Birch Trees

Gorham, NH  2016

Birch trees were made to be photographed using black and white film, don't you think?   One problem  I've run across with using film is that I tend to forget to finish the roll in a timely fashion.  This image sat in my Pentax ME Super for a year until I finally got around to finishing the roll and had it processed.

The Morgan in Black and White

Mystic Seaport, 2017

For a change of pace, I like to shoot black and white film from time to time.  Scenes around Mystic Seaport just look right when shot in Black and White.

Win This

New London, CT  2017

I saw this Mustang at a couple of festivals this year.  It was being raffled off as part of a fund raiser for a local Lion's Club.  I have a hard time believing this car is already considered to be a "classic" or "antique", since I was young teenager, just becoming interested in cars when the Mustang was introduced.  I even learned to drive a stick shift in my father's Mustang.  I almost bought a raffle ticket.
