USS Sequoia - The Presidential Yacht

New London, CT  2019

To seek shelter from some pretty rough weather, The USS Sequoia was recently docked in New London on her way to Maine for restoration.  This yacht served during the administrations of Presidents Hoover up until Jimmy Carter.

Serendipity II

Norwich, CT  2019

Yachts like this are a common site in and around the Mystic Seaport area and have been featured in this blog.  It's not quite as common to see a yacht like this docked in Norwich, CT.

Impetuous

Mystic, CT  2016

It's been a full 30 days since I posted my last picture of a yacht so here is this month's mega-yacht.  I came across the Impetuous during my last photo walk around Mystic.  She's 120 feet long has a crew of 4 and can accommodate 9 guests in 4 cabins.  Some amenities include a 17' tender, 2, two-man wave runners,  snorkeling gear, waveboards and other towables.   You can charter this yacht for a mere $60,000/wk...... plus expenses.

North Star Yacht

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2016

While I was looking at the antique engines on display, I couldn't help but notice this yacht coming in to dock.  Mystic Seaport has dockage facilities for boats and yachts of all sizes.  This is the North Star, approximately 126 feet long with room for 12 passengers in 5 staterooms.   I'm not sure if it is available for charter or not.

Rena

Noank, CT  2016

There was no shortage of boats to admire docked along the shores of the Mystic River during our evening sail on the Argia.  This particular yacht dominated the marina.  A little searching revealed Rena is a luxury charter yacht built in 1989 and underwent a recent retrofit in 2010.  She's 145 feet long and can accommodate 10-12 charter guests in 5 luxurious staterooms. Like any good luxury yacht, she comes complete with a large assortment of water toys for your outdoor leisure activities.  She has a crew of 7 and can be chartered for only $105,000 per week.  I think I need to check my 401K plan.... mmmmm.

MV Kahu

So as  I was enjoying my hot lobster roll at Abbott's and watching the steady parade of pleasure craft passing by,  this super yacht started to make its way past.  It was clearly far larger than any of the other boats normally seen in these waters and dwarfed all the other boats.  It was so big, that I couldn't capture the entire yacht with my 85 mm lens which provided some nice views of the other craft.  One never has the right lens!!

Noank, CT  2015

At one time the MV Kahu, was a ship in the Royal Navy of New Zealand.  It was purchased and refitted into a family yacht by Peter White-Robinson, who very conveniently happens to own the New Zealand based Fitzroy Yachts.  He then took his family and some friends on a year and half long cruise around the world.  The yacht can now be chartered for adventure cruises.  She's 122 ft long and has two diesel engines.  You can find out more about her and book your very own adventure cruise here.

More of the Freedom

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT  2015

It was hard to get this 104 foot motor yacht all into one frame with the lens I had with me.  It might be the largest yacht I've seen, but I would have to say, it was the prettiest one I've ever seen.

Freedom

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT

The "star" of this year's Wooden Boat Show at Mystic Seaport was the yacht Freedom.  Pictures hardly do this yacht justice.  It was designed by John Trumpy and built at the Mathis Yacht Building Co in Camden, NJ in 1926.  She's been totally restored and updated by McMillen Yachts Inc and includes room for 10 guests in 5 staterooms.  Fractional ownerships of this 104 foot fantail motor yacht are available, for a pretty hefty price.

Two Yachts

I've been told that the difference between a boat and a yacht is that a yacht can carry other boats.  So if that's true, the following picture is definitely a picture of a what is perhaps a very expensive yacht with some gorgeous lines.

Carrying smaller boats on a yacht makes good sense to me.  It's very similar to towing smaller cars behind large motor homes.  But why stop at just carrying a smaller boat onboard a yacht?  If you really need to get around whether in port or on the high seas, one really needs to carry a helicopter aboard your yacht.

Both pictures were taken in Vineyard Haven, on Martha's Vineyard.  Apparently some very wealthy people keep their yachts there.

Aphrodite

Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT

This is one of my favorite boats of all time.  I've seen her many times at Mystic Seaport, usually at the Antique Boat Show held each summer.  She was just one of many "small" craft that came to witness the launch of the Morgan.  I can't think of a more appropriate name for this boat.
