Stonington, CT  2017

They've been fishing in Stonington, CT for hundreds of years now.  The town boasts the last remaining commercial fishing fleet in the state of Connecticut.

Alamo Drug

San Antonio, TX  2017

I'm not sure if any drugs are really sold here anymore or not.  It looked more like a boutique selling souvenirs.

The Alamo

San Antonio, TX  2017

It's nice to be back home in front of my desktop computer.  It's much easier posting pictures from my iMac than trying to use my iPad.  I grew up learning about the Alamo, primarily from the Disney version of the events as portrayed on the weekly TV program "The Wonderful World of Disney".  I'm sure readers of my generation can remember Fess Parker's role as Davey Crockett.  This was the first place I wanted to visit during my recent trip to San Antonio.

Pardon the Interruption

The first part of January has been pretty busy for me and has interfered with my regular blog posts.  I haven't forgotten and hope to get back to regular posting next week.  I'm on vacation this week in San Antonio, TX,  and unlike the more technologically savvy bloggers I follow, I haven't been able to master getting photos from my iPhone, to my iPad and then posted here.  The first two steps work fine.  I'm finding that Blogger doesn't really talk well with my iPad and its Photos library.  Could be time to invest in a laptop for my travels, or perhaps look into a different blogging platform.  Things will improve next week.

Winthrop Hotel

New London, CT  2017

Architectural details remain long after the business ends.  Winthrop is a common name in New London history, since the city was founded in 1646 by John Winthrop Jr who also became a governor of the colony. I'm assuming the hotel was named after him.  The building now houses a couple of businesses, but for the most part appears vacant.  From the 2009 Issue of The Preservationist,  a publication of New London Landmarks, Inc:

The Winthrop Hotel was top grade with excellent cuisine and courteous and efficient service. Lighted throughout by electricity and gas, it was a reputable, up- to-date house, receiving generous patronage.

Niantic Bay Boardwalk

Niantic, CT  2017

There were a number of hardy souls braving the cold temperatures to walk the Boardwalk.

Hole in the Wall

Niantic, CT  2017

We had our first really major snowstorm of the year yesterday followed by a sunny but very cold day. The Hole in the Wall is a tunnel beneath the Amtrak railroad which runs along the shoreline in Niantic.  The tunnel provides access to our Boardwalk and the Hole in the Wall Beach.

Signs of Things to Come

New London, CT  2016

This is something new to downtown New London.   During the summer this parking lot was improved with new curbs, paving, etc.  Along with the beautification came the new parking meter kiosk.  It wasn't operable yet as of Dec 30, 2016, but I suspect my days of free parking in New London will be coming to an end very soon.
