Industrial Trust Co

Westerly, RI  2019

Old bank buildings were built to last and give the impression of being a very safe place to keep one's money.  These buildings are also one of the few places where Roman Numerals are used.  Roman Numerals are usually only seen around the time of the Super Bowl and perhaps on the faces of old clocks.  I was required to take two years of Latin back in high school and thanks to good old, Fr Nicholas, who I thought at the time was old enough to have known Julius Caesar personally, I think I figured out these dates.

MDCCCLXXXVII  is 1887 and MDCCCCXV is 1915.... I think.

Chimes

Westerly, RI  2019

Along with the 17 murals depicting the history of Westerly, RI, there are 6 musical instruments along the walking trail, like the one pictured here.  According to the website, they are durable, sustainable and perfectly tuned to enhance any outdoor space.  People are encouraged to make their own music with the attached mallets.  I could spend hours playing with this.  No music theory or skill is required.

Historic Mills

Westerly, RI 2019

I didn't get to see all the murals on display in Westerly, so I'll have to make a return trip sometime soon to catch the rest of them.  This is the last mural for now.

A note to my followers:  Blogger has not been behaving well for me lately, and I only just recently discovered that I have missed a number of comments made to my blog.  I do apologize for not  recognizing, publishing the comments nor replying to any of them  I appreciated everyone's kind words and encouragement as I continue to regain my strength, and I am happy to say, I think I'm almost 100% again.  I've also had problems when I've tried to comment to any of my favorite blogs, so if you haven't seen any comments from me lately, it's not for lack of trying. I'm in the process of trying to track down what might have changed either with Blogger or with my browser which might be causing these problems.  Rest assured, I do look at everyone's blog and have enjoyed them.  Hopefully, I can fix these issues soon.  Thanks for visiting!

Two "Murals"

Westerly, RI  2019

I guess by definition, these would not qualify as true murals, since upon close examination, they were not painted directly on the wall's surface.  Still, very nice art work though.

mu·ral noun: mural; plural noun: murals
1.  a painting or other work of art executed directly on a wall.

Granite Industry Mural

Westerly, RI  2019

Westerly, RI is celebrating their 350th Anniversary this year.  Throughout the city, murals depicting the history of Westerly have been painted.  I know didn't catch them all on this photo walk, so I'll have to return soon to get the rest of them.  You can read about the murals here.

Make Shift Drive-In

Westerly, RI  2017

Since I first discovered digital photography and began reading and following some of the many photo blogs dedicated to digital photography, I've been following the blog and work of Connecticut photographer Carl Weese.  Carl has spent a number of years traveling throughout the US documenting the remaining drive-in movie theaters and those that have been abandoned.  You can read about the project and view his work here.  I passed this scene recently and immediately thought of Carl's project.   It is obviously a make-shift drive-in theater, probably only open in the summer and  as such didn't make the cut for Carl's work.  The scene was very reminiscent of  a number of Carl's photos, which often featured the large screen as a key feature.  This is my humble attempt to capture some of the essence seen in Carl's work.

Not an Exit

Westerly, RI  2017

With no crowds entering the beach,  I don't think anyone would mind if one were to sneak out this entrance.
