Amistad

New London, CT  2015

This replica of the Amistad is currently berthed in New London, very close to where the original Amistad  was berthed after being brought to New London after the slave uprising in 1839.

  1. Interesting ship! Do they offer tours?

  2. This is a smaller ship than I imagined. The slave trade could not have been more inhumane. Interesting photo.

  3. The ship is smaller than the original Amistad. It was built at Mystic Seaport in 1999 and launched in 2000. She's strictly a replica, built using traditional shipbuilding techniques of the early 1800's. The ship is owned and operated by Amistad America, whose mission is to teach the lessons inherent in the slave uprising onboard in 1839. She has sailed all over the world, but unfortunately despite receiving lots of taxpayer money, Amistad America has accrued over 2 million dollars of debt due to fiscal mismanagement. The schooner is currently in court ordered receivership. I'm not sure if tours are offered now or not, but they have been in the past.
