Nathan Hale

New London, CT  2016

Every school child knows of Nathan Hale, a young school teacher who became a spy for George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War.  He was captured by the British, convicted as a spy and hanged.  His famous last words have been reported as:

"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country"

The school house where he taught has been preserved and is located in downtown New London.  This statue commemorates our local hero and sits on the campus of Mitchell College in New London.  At best this rendering of Nathan Hale is a generic representation of what Nathan Hale might have looked like.  He had no official portraits done during his life so no one really knows what he did look like.

  1. This is interesting to me! I saw a movie on TV on the 4th of July about spies in the American Revolution.. can't remember the name of it, but it starred Michael Wilding...oh wait...just looked it up by his name, it was "The Scarlet Coat" from 1955, it was worth watching!
This is a nice statue of Nathan Hale, even if we are not sure what he looked like!
