Goodspeed's Station

Haddam, CT

Just before crossing the Connecticut River on the swing bridge pictured  in my previous post, there is this old train station which now serves as a general store/antique store/collectible gift store.  It made for some interesting photos, both inside and out.

East Haddam Bridge

East  Haddam, CT 2016

This bridge is conveniently located about half way between Old Saybrook and Middletown, the two other cities south of Hartford that have bridges crossing the Connecticut River.  This swing bridge was opened on June 14, 1913 and said to be the longest swing bridge of this type in the world.  The ornate building across the river is the Goodspeed Opera House, home to some very fine Broadway caliber musicals.

Grand Central Station

East Haddam, CT  2015

No this not "THE" Grand Central Station, but it did serve as the railroad station for William Gillette's 3 mi narrow gauged railroad that was used to transport his guests throughout the 184 acre estate.  The railroad featured both a steam locomotive and an electric engine.  Some of the track beds now make up walking trails.

Gillette Castle II

East Haddam, CT  2015

The Gillette Castle is open during the season for tours. On this particular day, there was quite a crowd taking part.  William Gillette designed the castle, and many of the other attractions on his estate.  Visitors to the castle can see many elaborate door knobs, locks and an intricate system of mirrors designed by Gillette to observe the public areas from the master bedroom.  The castle is constructed using local stone on a steel framework.

Gillette Castle

East Haddam, CT  2015

The American actor William Gillette built this castle high above the Connecticut River in 1914.  He had no heirs so after he died, the state took over the castle and the property making it a state park in 1943.  The castle was recently restored and the park now features a visitors center, a museum as well as some hiking trails and picnic areas.  Over 300,000 visit the castle annually.
