Old Harbor, Block Island

New Shoreham, RI 2021

Think all of the ferries from either Connecticut or Rhode Island dock in the Old Harbor.  It's an easy walk from here to some great beaches, restaurants, and gift shops.

Departure to Block Island

New London, CT  2021

I took a break from photography and blogging last week, needing to attend to some other matters.  Nothing serious, just other work that needed to be done.  My wife and I had a day trip scheduled to visit, Block Island, RI, a relatively short ferry ride from New London on the high speed ferry.  I'll be sharing photos of our trip this week, all taken with my iPhone.

Cape Henlopen (LST-510 USS Buncombe County)

New London, CT  2020

This ferry is one of the oldest ferries in operation.  First built for World War II in 1944, she partook in the invasion at Normandy.  After being decommissioned in 1946, she was sold into commercial service and now sails between New London, CT and Orient Point, NY.

MV John H

New London, CT  2018

I'm sure I've posted images of this ferry in previous blog posts.  The MV John H was built exclusively for the Cross Sound Ferry in 1989.  It is the largest ferry in the fleet capable of carrying over 100 cars and 1000 passengers.

Awaiting Departure

Orient Point, NY  2018

We arrived early enough at the ferry terminal to get on the smaller ferry, which was leaving immediately  rather than wait the 30-40 minutes for the larger Susan Anne, pictured to the left.  This got us back to New London in plenty of time for a nice dinner.

Block Island Ferry

New London, CT  2018

Recovering from my surgery last June continues to interrupt my blogging and photography.  These pictures are from last May,  taken on a day-trip to Long Island to visit wineries.

This ferry operates seasonally and crosses the Connecticut River between the towns of Chester on the west and Hadlyme on the east.  There has been a ferry operating at this site for over 200 years.

Coming and Going

New London, CT  2017

Posting to my blog won't be too regular in the coming weeks.  I haven't had much time to get out to photograph, and I have some other projects going on making demands on my time.  I hope to resume a more regular schedule in a couple of weeks.  Thanks for looking.

Thames River Fog

New London, CT  2017

On this particular Sunday afternoon, the weather conditions were such as to provide some very interesting light.  There were some very local patches of dense fog, along with areas illuminated with bright sunshine.  I'm sure this picture doesn't do this scene justice, but you can see that the fog was thick enough that one couldn't see the other side of the Thames River, yet the boats were bathed is rich sunlight.  I hadn't seen anything quite like it before.

Susan Anne

New London, CT  2017

No photo walk around New London would be complete without at least one photo of a ferry.  I can't help myself.

New London Ferries

Groton, CT  2016

Another frequent subject of my blog, although  seen from a different point of view.  This shot is taken from the Groton side of the Thames River looking across to New London.

Munnatawket

New London, CT  2016

This ferry provides service between New London and Fishers Island, a small island just south of New London, which is actually a part of New York.
