Lot 65

Waxhaw, NC  2022

It has been a long time since I've posted anything.  My wife and I relocated to North Carolina in December and we're currently renting an AirBnb  apartment in Charlotte, awaiting the completion of our "retirement" home in Waxhaw.  We really like the Charlotte area, and so far I have not missed any of the cold weather and snow that has hit Connecticut and New England the last few weeks.  The picture was taken on January 11, and as you can see, we have a long ways to go before the house will be ready.

Nearing the End

Waxhaw, NC  2021

Does anyone else miss the caboose that was always at the end of a long freight train?  I'm sure some of my "more mature" readers remember them.

More Train

Waxhaw, NC  2021

Check out the crowd of people on the pedestrian bridge over the tracks.  That's definitely the best place to be to watch the trains.  Clicking on a picture will give you a larger view.

Jackson's Birthplace

Waxhaw, NC  2021

In 1767, somewhere near Waxhaw, Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States was born.  It is not sure if his actual birthplace was in North Carolina or South Carolina.  The exact border was not known at that time and there are conflicting  accounts.  Jackson, himself, said he was born in South Carolina, but a midwife present during his birth claims the birthplace to be in North Carolina at the spot where this monument sits.  The two possible locations are separated by only a few hundred yards or so, with the current border between them.  Both states claim Jackson as their native son.  North Carolina erected this monument in 1911, and has done little since.  Andrew Jackson State Park,  located a short distance from here in South Carolina seems to be a more fitting memorial to Jackson's birthplace.

Colin's Sports

Waxhaw, NC  2021

Colin, on the other hand, never had any interest in soccer, much preferring  baseball and lacrosse.

This was a busy day for Colin, playing a baseball game at 9:00am followed by a lacrosse match at 11:00am.  I wish I had his energy!

Clara the Soccer Player

Waxhaw, NC  2021

Grandkids these days are very busy.  Neither of my daughters had any interest in playing soccer but participated in girls softball and basketball.  So I'm not sure where Clara got her love of playing soccer.

Meet the Cahill Family

Charlotte, NC  2021

You met Colin and Clara yesterday.  Here they are with their proud parents, Mary, my youngest daughter  and her husband, Billy.  Nice looking family, if I do say so myself.

Grandkids

Waxhaw, NC  2021

Here is the  real reason for visiting Waxhaw, NC for the second time in two months.  I know of no other cuter grandkids than Colin, age 8 and Clara, age 5.  This was the occasion of Colin's first Holy Communion.  He looks so grown up.

The Mill

Waxhaw, NC  2021

It looks like a mill with the water wheel that turns, but I have a feeling it's purely for show and part of the namesake for this community.

Water Tower

Waxhaw, NC  2021

This tower is seen from all over downtown Waxhaw and has some historical significance to the community.  Beneath the tower is open green space which serves as a gathering spot for community events during the year
