Ledge Light
New London, CT
Way out on the horizon, looking pretty small is the Ledge Light, which marks the entrance to the Thames River, and harbor at New London. I don't think it's operational anymore, or if it is, it is totally automated. I've never driven by during the night to see if the light works or not.

Globe Spirit Shop
New London, CT 2017
There is no shortage of liquor stores/package stores in New London, or any other town in Connecticut for that matter. In Connecticut these type of stores sell not only beer and wine, but other "hard" liquors as well. I find each store very unique and colorful in how they display their products and what is on sale. This one is pretty typical.

Lobster Dock?
Niantic, CT 2017
I'm not sure what this is. I've noticed it for quite some time now, sitting in the middle of the Niantic River. It doesn't move from it's spot, has a little shelter of some sort, and a pile of lobster pots. I haven't seen any activity around it, but then again I just might not pass it at the right times to see any activity. It's not a boat, or a barge, and I can't really call it a dock. It's just there.

The Vanderbilt Grace
Newport, RI 2017
Newport, RI is famous for it's mansions which were all built towards the end of the 1800's and early 1900's by some of the wealthiest families in America at that time. They were often used as summer homes and as such might only be occupied during the summer months. This mansion was built in 1909 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, one of those Vanderbilts. The mansion has been restored and now operates as a boutique hotel in Newport, featuring a number of luxury suites. I'm not sure what the room rates are to stay an evening here, but I guess if I have to ask, I probably couldn't afford to stay here.

Lunch Time
South Freeport, ME 2017
One can't visit Maine without having some lobster. This is just one of many lobster pounds/seafood places one can find in Maine. It's located right on the water and had just opened for the season when I drove through Maine a couple of weekends ago. I was a little disappointed in my lunch however, since their lobster rolls used cold lobster meat with some added mayo. I've heard that this is the traditional "lobster roll", especially in Maine. Readers of this blog might recall seeing some pictures I've posted here featuring Abbotts Lobster in the Rough, a famous lobster pound not too far from where I live in Connecticut. There you can hot lobster rolls which are made with hot lobster meat and are drenched with butter, not mayo. I prefer my lobster rolls hot.

Port City Sound
Port City Sound, Portland, ME
The highlight of the quartet contest was the performance of this quartet, Port City Sound, from Portland, ME. They were competing out of their own Division just to obtain a qualifying score for the next higher level of competition and as such were not eligible to win this contest. This quartet regularly competes at our International Contest as a Seniors Quartet and brought the house down with their parody of the song "The Masquerade is Over" which poked fun at themselves for being old.

Men of Fundy
Men of Fundy
Janet Kidd, Director
In what was considered to be an upset, the Men of Fundy from Saint John, NB won the chorus championship in this contest. They were far from the largest chorus in the contest which goes to show you you don't have to be a big chorus to win, you just need to sing well. They deserved to win

City of Lakes Chorus
City of Lakes Chorus
Paul Stubbington, director
You might be more familiar with barbershop quartet singing, and there are clearly a lot more than 4 guys on stage here. Even though the ensemble is larger, they still sing 4-part harmony in the barbershop style. This chorus from Dartmouth, NS placed second in the chorus contest.

River Valley Chorus
River Valley Chorus
Christine Freeman, director
I'm a long time member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and have sung in many choruses and quartets over the last 40 plus years or so. This past weekend I attended one our divisional contests in Fredericton, NB, Canada and since I was not competing or had any other official duties for the weekend, I thought I'd try to capture some of the competitors. We strictly prohibit the use of flash photography during our contests, so I was limited to use the available lights on stage. I think I got some good but not great shots. It's hard to judge exposure. This particular chorus not only competed, but organized the convention and served as our hosts for the weekend. They did a great job both on and off the stage.
