Red Hook Bait and Tackle, Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY

Besides all the taxidermy on display, there were many figurines, statues, nautical items, and other "works of art" just about where ever anyone looks here.  I have photographed many other figureheads at Mystic Seaport,  but none quite like this mermaid.  I would like to think that she actually did adorn the bow of a sailing vessel, and was rescued from the scrap heap to serve as the unofficial hostess of the Red Hook Bait and Tackle Shop.  In reality, she's probably a very nice reproduction.

  1. The mermaid is just lovely. She looks too weathered to be a reproduction. Perhaps you could find out more information?

    1. Yes, she does look rather weathered. I'll have to see if I can find out more about her. That might mean making another visit to the Red Hook Bait and Tackle Shop.

    2. Don't forget your camera on your return trip. There must be more images just waiting to be taken.

    1. It does look like she has a beard. I hadn't noticed that before. Probably just the weathering of the wood and paint.
