Even with the stay at home orders in the state of Connecticut, the boardwalk here in Niantic is a popular place to take a walk, maintaining a distance though.

The city has provided these convenient stations to dispense sunscreen for those who walk the 1.2 mile long boardwalk along Niantic Bay.  It even tells you how long you should stay out in the sun.

Acela Express

Amtrak trains don't have a stop in Niantic.  The closest train stations are in New London and Old Saybrook, both of which are pretty convenient, so there is no need for a train station here.

Niantic River Bridge

Amtrak opened this new bridge in 2012 replacing a bridge that had been service since 1907.  Along with the bridge, Amtrak helped to pay for improvements to the boardwalk and the beach.

It's that time of the year when everyone looks back and comes up with the "best of " lists whether it be movies, books, albums, cameras or even photos.   So not to be undone, and also since I've been having a hard time coming up with timely and what I consider quality photos,  I'll be presenting one photo from each month in 2017 for the next 12 days.   They might not be my best photos of the year, but for whatever reason,  they didn't make it into my blog on my first pass. Perhaps some of these photos deserve a second chance.  This was taken in January, after one of our more significant snowfalls in 2017.

The Acela train is Amtrak's "high speed" express train that runs along the Northeast Corridor line from Boston to Washington D.C.  It only stops in New Haven in Connecticut.

This is what the Niantic Boardwalk looked like after Tropical Storm Irene came through back in 2011.  The walkway was primarily a gravel path running along the rocky beach. From this photo, you can't really see the damage.  It got worse after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.  You can see for yourself the improvements made to the original boardwalk below.

Steel piles were driven along the boardwalk to reinforce the now concrete walkway.  It looks very nice now.

I've been waiting for this for a long time.  The Niantic Boardwalk was heavily damaged, first by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, followed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.  This year the remaining repairs have been completed and the entire 1-mile length has been re-opened for walkers and joggers.

It's nice to walk the beach in the "off season"....  not as crowded as in the summertime.  Work is continuing on the Niantic Bay Boardwalk, which was heavily damaged by both tropical storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy.  Hopefully the entire 1-mile long boardwalk will be completed by next summer.
