Event Tent

North Stonington, CT

Like a lot of wineries, Jonathan Edwards Winery is an ideal location for weddings and wedding receptions.  During the spring and summer months, they are booked just about every weekend. I speak from experience and I highly recommend the staff here.  They are ideal hosts for any type of event.  This tent looks like something right out of medieval times with the pennants waving.  I keep expecting to see some knights, princesses and perhaps a court jester or two.

Stone Steps and Tree

North Stonington, CT

I've often mentioned and featured Jonathan Edwards winery in this blog and have stated often it's one of my favorite places to visit.  Not only are the wines good, but views from the tasting room can be spectacular.  There is a certain beauty to be found here in the winter time, even though the vines themselves are barren and waiting for the warmth of spring.

Stone Walls

Gay City State Park, Hebron, CT

Stone walls are ubiquitous in southeast Connecticut so it was no surprise to see a number of them while hiking though Gay City State Park.   The walls last forever, it seems.

Stone Wall II

Haley Farm State Park, Groton, CT

Here's another example of Caleb Haley's talent for building stone walls.  I'm not sure if any of the stones had to be cut or not.  They must have been shaped a little to get such a good fit. Either that or Caleb had a great eye for finding, sorting, and knowing just where to place each boulder he found. Still, it must have taken quite a bit of time back in the late 1800's to construct this wall.

Stone Wall

Haley Farm State Park, Groton, CT

Caleb Haley's hobby was building stone walls.  He would extract boulders from through out his property and move them in place with an ox-drawn stone puller.  The results of his handiwork can still be seen throughout the park.  The walls were used to separated a number of pastures.  Some of the stone walls are in remarkable shape.  I'm sure he had no shortage of boulders here.

Stone Wall

There are stone walls all through out Connecticut.  Some, like this one, clearly delineate a pasture.  Others mark property lines. I'm sure at one time they all served a purpose but I think most today are decorative.  This particular stone wall was found in of all places, North Stonington.
