Stone Wall

There are stone walls all through out Connecticut.  Some, like this one, clearly delineate a pasture.  Others mark property lines. I'm sure at one time they all served a purpose but I think most today are decorative.  This particular stone wall was found in of all places, North Stonington.

  1. Ed, that's a great stone wall shot. Didn't these walls serve as a place to put stones removed from fields? A farmer friend said his only sure crop every year was new stones pushed to the surface by frost. Picking rock is an ag task most people don't think much about unless they've done it.

  2. I'm sure you're right. I'm amazed at how well these walls stand up. I know there is some skill involved in placing the stones, but it's not like they're actually fitted together. Although they don't look all that solid, some of these walls have stood for hundreds of years out here. We have no shortage of rocks out here.
