This building has been pictured in my blog before, but not from this angle.  This is capitol of the state of Rhode Island.  The current State House is the seventh state house of Rhode Island, and second state house to be located in Providence.  It was built between the years 1895-1904.

Preservation

As I was walking through the financial district in historic downtown Providence looking for interesting buildings to photograph, I came across this particular "building."

At first glance it looked like a number of the other older buildings in Providence but upon closer inspection, it just didn't seem quite right.  

Looking at the pictures you might think that this is just the front of what was once a pretty big building, and you'd be right.  Only when one walks behind this building do you see to what extent the historic preservation people in Providence have gone through to keep the front of this building intact.

I'm not sure what the historic significance of this building is.  It's nice to see it being preserved, but I do hope someone finishes building something that incorporates, supports and preserves this facade

This building dates from 1884 and looks like it is in great shape, and still being used to day.  There are a number of buildings like this in Providence.

Providence Building

Providence is a pretty historic city with a wide variety of architecture seen.  I'm not sure what this building is, but it is one of the taller buildings near the financial district in downtown Providence.  

Transportation Department

This building is right across the street from the state house,  pictured in yesterday's post.  For such a small state, Rhode Island does have a pretty large building housing its Transportation Department. 

State Capitol

I get to Hartford frequently, but have yet to photograph the state capitol of Connecticut.  I'll have to fix that real soon.  I was in Providence, Rhode Island today and was able to capture some nice images of Rhode Island's State Capitol.  The official name of Rhode Islands is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations".

Crawford Street Bridge

I could not find a Crawford St on current maps of the city of Providence, so I was wondering why this bridge bore the street's name.  In yet another example of the power of Google and the internet,  a quick search revealed that this bridge was originally built in 1873 and rebuilt in 1930.  At one time this bridge was much wider, being listed in the Guinness Book of world records in 1988 as the widest bridge in the world at 1150 feet.  Sometime later the city decided to narrow the bridge to expose more of the Providence River make more pedestrian-friendly cityscape.

I debated a long time on whether or not to post this image.  I know it has some technical flaws,  but for some reason, I still like it.  

US Customshouse

I thought this building looked out of place.  Surrounded by its more modern and taller neighbors, it was if time had forgotten about his place.  Turns out this building was built between the years of 1855-57 and originally housed the post office, Federal District Court, the Internal Revenue Service, District Attorney, Collector of Customs and the Steamboat Inspector.  It doesn't look large enough to hold all those offices, even back in the day!  It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972 and after renovations costing over half a million dollars was opened in 1992 as the John E Fogarty Judicial Complex

Providence County Courthouse

This courthouse was completed in 1930 and is the 11th tallest building in Providence.  I had wondered why this county courthouse was so large until I found out that it not only holds the Providence County Superior Court but also the Rhode Island Supreme Court.
