Garden Scene

New London, CT  2017

It's hard to believe this garden scene is located right downtown New London.  This is a historic piece of property behind the Shaw Mansion and dates from the mid 1700's.

Old East Windmill

Heritage Museum and Gardens
Sandwich, MA

Originally built in 1800 in the town of Orleans, MA. the Old East Windmill worked there for 93 years  grinding barely, corn, wheat, rye and salt.  The founder of the Heritage Museum and Gardens purchased  the windmill in 1968, had it disassembled and moved to it's present location.  It seems quite at home amongst the gardens there.

Big Bugs

Heritage Museum and Gardens
Sandwich, MA

Currently on display at the Heritage Museum and Gardens are a number of sculptures by artist David Rogers of bugs.  Each is made of natural materials, either wood that has been found dead, or harvested sustainably.  They all looked quite at home in the gardens, although a little large.

Garden

Harkness State Park

I was getting tired of looking at all my pictures from the blizzard last weekend, so I decided to re-visit some photos taken this past summer.  It won't be too long until the colors turn green and there won't be so much white around.

Cupola Garden

Falmouth, MA

This cupola serves as a centerpiece for the Cupola Garden,  a garden maintained by the Falmouth Garden Club.  I'm not sure if it serves a another purpose or not

West Garden II

Harkness Memorial State Park
Waterford, CT

I had visited Harkness Memorial State on a nice day back in January of this year and posted a number of pictures taken that day, including some of this garden. The garden wasn't so green back then, but one could see more of the Italian-influenced architecture back then.

Statue

I found this fellow watching over the East Garden at Harkness State Park.  I think this garden has a heavy Asian influence, as evidenced by this statue.  I'm not sure which Asian god this statue represents though.  It could be a statue of Buddha.

Gardens

The pictures show a portion of the gardens at Harkness State Park.  I'm sure they're much more colorful in the spring and summer time, but nevertheless the architecture still looks good in the winter time.  The gardens were designed by Beatrix Farrand, a landscape designer and one of the founders of the American Society of Landscape Architects.  The gardens here have been fully restored and look much as they did in the 1930's, and include some of Farrand's original plantings.

These are views of the West Garden, which have a strong Italian influence.  If fact, it was once referred to as the Italian Garden.
