A Tree Reflects in Norwich

Normally I like the symmetry one gets seeing both an object and it's reflection.  In this case, I opted to only capture the reflection. I'm sharing this with Weekend Reflections where you'll find reflections from around the world.  Enjoy the weekend.  

Ithaki

New London, CT  2015

The bulk cargo carrier, Ithaki was in port this weekend.  It was built in 2014, and has a gross tonnage of 23268 tons.  Last I knew, she's on her way to Savannah.  I'd love to know what these ships carry.

Harbor Reflections

One sees New London with a whole new perspective from the deck of a ferry.  The Coast Guard Barque Eagle was in port this weekend.  Looking closely you might be able to see the Shore Line East commuter train located in front of the red, brick Union Station.  One can see cars in a nearby parking lot.  I really needed an airplane in this photo so I could show all four modes of transportation, but I had to settle for only three.

Un-named Boats

Stonington, CT

Notice anything about these boats?  They were moored not far from other boats that I have featured in some recent posts from Stonington, CT.  I'm sure they're part of the commercial fishing fleet that is based in Stonington.  One can tell they're well worn.  What I noticed when I found them is that they have no names, at least not on the bow of the boats.  I've always liked the colorful and whimsical names boat owners come up with when they name their boats, so I felt it kind of sad that they lacked a name.  I didn't get around to view the stern, however, so their names might be on display there.  

Norwich Harbor

This is the northern most reaches of the Thames River, which has been featured in previous recent posts.  Here in the harbor at Norwich, the Thames River meets the Yantic, Shetucket and Quinebaug Rivers which flow into this harbor.  In the spring and summer months, the harbor is alive with activity catering to pleasure craft of all sizes.

I finally had some spare time and some good weather to get out and do a little photography.  I'm sure I've posted some photos of this part of New London before.  This is one of many piers reaching out into the mouth of the Thames River, just before it empties into Long Island Sound.  The sound would be off to the right of the picture.  There is a nice walkway along the piers and a nice place to sit and watch the boat traffic in and out of the harbor.  Although today's weather was pretty mild, with some sunshine, this place will be much nicer to visit in another two months or so. 

Reflections

Although now used for recreational boating, this harbor in Norwich was once bustling with boats carrying goods to and from Norwich by way of the Thames River.  One can sail from here all the way into Long Island Sound, which is about 15-20 miles to the south.  In the summer time the slips are all filled with boats, but at this time of the year without the boats present,  the water allows for some nice reflections.
