Rock Ridge
Oswegatchie Hills, Niantic, CT
Following along the red trail, I came upon this ridge of solid rock. It's amazing that even without any soil to speak of at this part of the trail, somehow trees have taken a foot hold in the bedrock and can survive.
As you might have guessed from a number of my posts, there is a lot of bedrock here in the state of Connecticut. I find it fascinating, especially reading about the geologic history of some of these outcroppings. The "bones of the earth" is a very apt description.

Those places where bedrock comes to the surface are always interesting, like seeing the bones of the earth itself.
